café imperial

To celebrate my brother’s birthday and as a family get together, we headed to Café Imperial for lunch. We had to reserve as this place is quite popular because of the history and beautiful interior. As soon as you step in, you are met with very high ceilings, colorful tiled walls and a display case of desserts.

The menu was a nice mix of local and non-local cuisine. They also have a ‘secret menu’. We saw items online that weren’t on the menu given, but when asked they had it. The staff were also very professional, from the uniform to how they serve.

For the starter, I had rabbit croquet. Having a pet rabbit made me feel iffy picking it, but I still did. It tasted quite similar to chicken and but overall the other ingredients had a more prominant presence. 7.5/10

The main I chose was their lamb shank on a bed of cream of spinach. The portion was large. The lamb was very well cooked and the sauce paired well with it. The spinach was like expected, cooked and seasoned. Hard to go wrong. Only comment it that although it was all flavorful, the level of salt in the sauce and spinach was on the saltier side.

As the food was very filling, I shared desserts. All their case dessert are made by a well known pastry chef so we had to try them. We got a vanilla cheesecake and some type of mango and passionfruit mouse. Both were excellent. Not too sweet (very asian thing to say lol). The vanilla was more of a heavier type of cheesecake, but as it was small, it was enjoyable. Personally I think the mango passionfruit one was better. It was a fantastic balance between sweet mango and tart passionfruit. It was mango mouse covered in a passionfruit glaze with chunks of mango at the center.
