collection of experiences and experiments

first day

Today was my first day of Chinese school at SCE Chinese Culture University!

I had no idea what to expect, but I was still looking forward to it. To get there from where I am staying, I have to take the MRT and change two or three times depending on which stops I change at. Once I get to my stop, I need to walk through Daan Park. It is a very beautiful and large park with many things to do.

The first class went quite well. We introduced ourselves with what Chinese we knew and dove straight into our textbook. The teacher told us what kind of notebooks we need to be using so afterwards I headed to a nearby stationary store. The stationary store here are insane. Aisles and aisles for one certain thing in a variety of sizes, colors, and designs. They like to have many different options from color scheme to cartoon/anime characters to just plain cute options. There are thousands of pen and pencil options that are all different. There is a range of options in a range of prices so it is highly unlikely you will not find something that you like. I actually had a hard time finding a plain regular lined notepad.

what I got:

That evening I headed out with my mom to a nearby street that has many food stalls everyday. In Taiwan it is very common for streets to be filled with many stalls selling all kinds of fresh vegetables, fruits, and meals/food.

The soup was delicious. It was the perfect balance of sour and spicy with a good consistancy 8/10. The buns were fresh and flavorful 7/10. Duck blood is commonly eaten in Taiwan. There is no irony or gammy taste or smell. The texture is similar to jelly but not as soft and crumbly 8/10.

We also couldn’t resist buying fruit. I love fruit and the fruit Taiwan has to offer is phenominal. The variety is large and most, if not all, is very good.

Guava is one of the less sweet fruits here. The most common type here is the one with white flesh. The pink flesh one is around, just not as popular. The small yellow dots are seeds. These are small but quite hard. In the very center, surrounded by the seeds, is the sweetests and softest part. The rest is more crisp. This fruit isn’t a juicy fruit, but is high in fibre, light, and tasty.

Passion fruit is a fruit with a thicker skin that isn’t eaten. The inside is the part that is usually eaten. The darker black shade is the seeds which are covered in the ‘fruit’ part. All the insides are eaten, including the seeds. The seeds give it a crunch while the rest gives sweetness and juiciness.

Wax apple is nothing like an apple. Or wax. It isn’t a juicy fruit but is crisp. The crispness is lighter and fluffier than an apple or pear. It is sweet, but one of the less sweet fruits.
