hualien pt 4

It was another slow relaxed day. Grandma cooked food that I had for brunch.

veg + stirfry noods + pig head + breadfruit soup

Later that day we met up with a friend and caught up over some douhua. This is something I haven’t had in a while. The shop we went to was an old one that has been serving it for many many years. They only serve this one dish, but everyone loves it.

Douhua is a cold dessert of tofu in sweet water. The water sometimes has a little ginger or tea flavor. This shop serves it with the option to add tapioca pearls and/or peanuts. Perfect for a hot summer day. 8.5/10

After hanging out for a couple hours, my mother and I headed back and went window shopping. Near where my grandparents live is a shop selling all kinds of pork jerky and pork floss. The smell is so fragrant we had to get some. As it’s all sold by weight, we were able to just get a couple slices.

Got two flavors. One more peppery and the other more spicy. They are sweeter than western jerky, but that is expected as in Taiwan many things seems to be more on the sweeter side even when it is something savory. This may just be because I compare it to the salty savory I have had more of growing up.

During our (window) shopping, we stopped as a Japanese drugstore chain. They had really cute decorations up with a ‘bridge’. Not sure if the inside of a drugstore is the best place for a photoshoot, but it a fun little thing inside a shop.

The weather this day was particularly hot so we decided to stop for shaved ice before calling it a day. The place we went to is one my mother used to go to when she was younger.

They had many options and toppings, preset, or custom. We went with a preset option. Instead of shaved ice, it was shaved milk. Toppings were fresh ripe mango, milk jelly, all drizzled with condensed milk. This wasn’t too sweet as the shaved milk and jelly weren’t sweetened. This made the mango and consended milk flavor standout more which was very nice. 7.5/10
